Concerns about food security are growing around the world. The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) projects that the human population will have surpassed the ability of existing arable land to provide sufficient quantities of food by 2050. Food production must double to meet population estimates for 2050. Then, in 2018, the U.N. Special Report on Climate Change estimated that, as a result of climate change, existing arable land is actually being lost.
With the current COVID-19 pandemic, the world is experiencing how easy it is to become food insecure. This pandemic resulted in people losing income overnight, and thus the ability to purchase food. Food banks are under-supplied, and under-staffed, and food production facilities faced closures and staff shortages due to outbreaks of the virus. At the same time, food harvesting and trucking became less available due to the same reason. Farmers needed to plow crops under in their fields due to being unable to harvest or ship them. Finally, local and regional farm resources, even those repurposed from being restaurant providers to being direct-to-consumer, turned out to be insufficient to cover the actual demand.
